The first logical, and perhaps the easiest, thing to do would be to search the internet for headshots to see which ones stand out. One of the photographers that took those headshots might be the one for you. This would be especially true if several of the headshots that appeal to you were taken by the same photographer.

There should be compliments and praise. You will need this to bring to the sometimes tedious shoot. Your photographer should display a range of patience. This will also be important to be at ease with him or her during the shoot. And they should also let you know what they intend to portray in order to get you the roles you desire.

His procedure should be discussed next. In order to get four or more completely different looks for your comp card, he will briefly take you through a general procedure that he uses. It should include your instructions as to what type of clothing to bring to the shoot, and the results should prove to be interesting to each of the directors, agents and producers to which you intend to present them.

He or she may start with no makeup at all, or maybe a little lip gloss. The lighting should be great and actually subdue some facial flaws. As the session progresses, you will change clothing, and more makeup will be applied. Towards the end of the session, you will have had several outfit changes, more makeup applied, and a final more glamorous look at the end, although still not heavily made up. Women might want more of a made up look to attract more glamorous roles.

When all is done, you should have a hard time deciding what four or five completely different looks to choose from for your comp card. There should be one fabulous shot for your 8 x 10s, and another for the internet. If you have found the right photographer to give you the different looks you need to be noticed, you have used the best actor headshot photographer.

As you get your comp card made up, make sure you find a really good pro headshot photographer in NY or LA, and find some great headshot photos that you want to use to show as an example to your own photographer.
