Profiles of people have been captured in various famous photographs down the ages. Portrait photography deals with showing a person or a group with all their unique characteristics.

A well clicked portrait photograph doesn’t follow convention, and shows the subject in a mental state that makes the picture distinctive. However, portrait photographs are also clicked in the traditional style with a single person or the entire family as subjects, and these mostly find their place in family albums.

An appropriate close up bringing the subject’s face into focus differentiates a truly expert portrait photograph from an amateur one. This is achieved by a common camera trick of making the background slightly foggy and unclear so that the person’s face gets the maximum focus. A bigger aperture used in a camera can achieve perfect results for this purpose. However, in some portraits where the subject needs to be seen along with the background, particularly in photographs taken outdoors, a normal aperture serves the purpose better.

Without ample light to illuminate the face, photographers find it difficult to click a good image. However, some important photography guidelines if seriously followed can produce that perfect portrait photograph. One of the ways is to make the subject sit near the window such that the light coming from it falls on only part of the face. A reflective surface can be employed to light up the other side of the subject’s face. However, portrait photography is best done in studios as lights can be regulated there.

Another important thing that you must remember is that the more at ease a subject is during the photography session, higher the chances are of getting a perfect portrait photograph. Technical wizardry in photography will work only when the subject is comfortable and relaxed, and displays his or her real self before the camera.
